Coinkite has officially unveiled the Coldcard MK5, introducing the first major hardware refresh to its flagship Bitcoin wallet lineup since the launch of the MK4 in 2022. The new device arrives with a range of usability-focused improvements while maintaining the strong security features that have made Coldcard a popular choice among Bitcoin self-custody enthusiasts.
Announced on March 10, 2026, the Coldcard MK5 is designed to make Bitcoin transactions smoother and more intuitive without compromising the security standards that long-time users expect.
According to Coinkite co-founder NVK, the MK5 represents more than a simple hardware update.
“The MK5 isn’t just an update; it’s a reimagining of the user experience,” NVK said. He added that the wallet is more durable, easier to use, and offers improved visibility while preserving the robust security framework trusted by the Bitcoin community.
One of the most noticeable upgrades is the new 1.54-inch display protected by Gorilla Glass. Compared to previous models, the screen is tougher and easier to read, helping users review transaction details more comfortably.
The company has also redesigned the physical buttons. Unlike the MK4’s recessed buttons, which required users to press into a socket, the MK5 features buttons that sit nearly flush with the device. This provides clearer tactile feedback and a more comfortable user experience.
Another key enhancement comes in the form of upgraded NFC functionality. The improved Near Field Communication system is designed to make wireless signing workflows more reliable, building on features first introduced with the Coldcard Q.
Despite these usability improvements, Coinkite has left the wallet’s security architecture largely unchanged. The MK5 continues to use the dual secure element design that helped distinguish the MK4 from competitors. The setup combines secure chips from two different manufacturers alongside a microcontroller, helping keep private keys protected and fully air-gapped.
The wallet also retains its transparent case design, allowing users to visually inspect internal components for potential hardware tampering. Coinkite views this transparency as an additional layer of physical security that many competing wallets do not offer.
Importantly, all five upgrades focus on improving day-to-day usability rather than altering the wallet’s security foundation. The MK5 runs the same open-source firmware that has been reviewed and audited by the Bitcoin community over the years. It also remains a Bitcoin-only device, reflecting Coinkite’s long-standing product philosophy.
The launch comes at a time when the hardware wallet market is becoming increasingly competitive. Several manufacturers have introduced touchscreens and advanced wireless features, while Trezor released the Safe 7 in late 2025. However, Coinkite continues to prioritize physical buttons and tactile feedback over touchscreen-based interfaces.
The Coldcard MK5 is now available through Coinkite’s official store in several color options, including orange and a glow-in-the-dark version. Although pricing was not disclosed, the wallet is positioned as a premium solution for Bitcoin holders who value air-gapped security and self-custody.
